The Ins and Outs of an Orchidarium
Maurice has been growing orchids for almost 40 years. He started growing on a west-facing windowsill and progressed to flower carts with lights next.
He finally switched to growing orchids in enclosed spaces. His first set-up included simple shower curtains to increase the humidity, but he soon designed a true orchidarium.
One can grow about 80% of all orchids in this enclosed space - anything that requires a higher humidity will be happy to grow here.
Maurice says growing orchids is not difficult, one just needs to identify the required growing condition for each orchid and try to provide it regarding light, temperature, and humidity.
He will discuss several types of enclosed environments such as a globe, a tank and an orchidarium. He will explain which requirements are crucial and which are more forgiving. Many of the rules for growing in an enclosed space also apply to windowsill, skylight, or sun room growing.
Maurice has served on several American Orchid Society committees and is past-president of the Manhatten Orchid Society. Maurice is also an awarded photographer for the AOS North East Judging Center.
